I have tried numerous times to get the reader to work, to no avail. I'm now tired of rebooting (over 6 times).

The installs keep failing with the program indicating its transfering files and then freezing the system. XP sees its a new Dekart USB device during initial install so I presume the card actually works (though perhaps not completely?) I've rebooted, uninstalled, reinstalled, tried Vista drivers - all to no avail. It freezes the sytem every time. I'm not impressed!

At no time does XP ever indicate the device in on the system (in Device Manager) and of course, nothing works. i've tried it with a card init (Rogers gsm) and without.

Any suggestions before I ask for my money back?

The first thing that comes into my mind is that the installer does not behave correctly on the system (this could be caused by the presence of other software; perhaps a conflict with a program that prevents the installer from writing files to the system directory?).

You should go to the device manager and uninstall anything that is related to this device (so that you make sure you have a clean sheet in front of you). Then, rather than using the EXE installer for the driver, use this version instead: http://files.dekart.com/drivers/DK38-PCSC-2K-XP-Vista-VistaX64.zip

Unzip, and when Windows asks where the driver is - indicate that folder. You said you already tried a Vista driver (so I guess you are talking about this one, or an older version of it).

If so - can you tell me at which point the freeze occurs? (ex: before, or after Windows finds the driver and acknowledges that it is the right one).

Also, what kind of a freeze is that? Is it one of those in which not even the mouse can move? Or only the window with the progress bar is frozen?

Do you happen to have any tools that run in the background and prevent programs from applying changes to the system? There are also programs a la "ACME Magic Uninstaller Plus" (which monitor all the actions that happen when something is installed, so that afterwards these actions could be undone). The hypothesis is that such a program running in the background could be configured to silently ignore such actions - which explains why the driver cannot get installer correctly.

You should also attempt other approaches - connect the reader to a different USB port; if you are using a USB hub - try connecting it directly to a port on the system's motherboard, etc.

thanks Alex,

yeah I figured maybe soemthing was blocking it so turned off my anti-virus, no luck. yes, I tried the vista64 package ( viewed this forum before I first responded) but to no avail also. It freezes after beginning to read the driver (the copy icon is working) . The mouse moves but no programs start up or repsond to the mouse. Shutdown doesn't work, needs power off. And I tried different direct USB ports (no hub).
Sigh, am thinking next to try it on Safe mode to see what if anything might be blocking it.

well, ran installer under Safe mode. It worked ok in that mode and indicated it was installed ok.
First reboot though to normal mode, the system froze. I rebooted again and left card in the usb and this time it seems to be working. Read my Rogers gsm card (no real data on it but telephone number and 2 deleted sms msgs)
I then unplugged and replugged and it seems to be still working. Now I just need to understand when the SIM card gets used and when not.

Please consider this thread closed.
