Hi, I have a question for you: is your card reader compatible with 128k sim cards? Do you know any programs able to make a restore of phone book and sms previously copied on pc as a backup?
Thanks! Gianni

Gianni,

we did test the card reader with some 128K cards, it worked fine, but I cannot guarantee that the same applies to all 128K cards.

Generally, if the logical structure of the card is compliant with the GSM standard, then the size of the card does not matter.

Copying the phone book is possible, take a look at SIM Manager (http://www.dekart.com/products/card_management/sim_manager/). It does not support SMS management yet.

As for making a complete backup of a SIM card, take a look at this story about SIM card cloning (http://www.lazybit.com/index.php/b/2006/02/15/how_to_clone_a_sim_card_not).

Hi Alex, thanks for your answer.

What an interesting article about sim card cloning.
Just for curiosity: I read about SIMCon (Sim content controller, 95€ www.simcon.no), a forensic software which would be able to read any kind of data stored on any sim card, even without typing a PIN code, just by using a common PC/SC reader...
Is that possible?
I mean, it might be quite scary if this one or other cheap tools could read any private data without efforts. Could it really be that simple?

Can SIMCon get the PIN or PUK codes?

PIN and PUK codes are not stored in files on the card. With SIMCon, you can authenticate yourself with PIN or PUK, or you can choose to read the accessible files without any of the codes.

The PUK code (the master code) cannot be changed, and is always stored by the service provider. It is therefore always possible to obtain the correct PUK code for a card from the service provider.

As it is stated in their FAQ - when you do not know the PIN or PUK, you can still read the SIM card, but only the allowed files. In other words - nothing new :-)

OK, thank you!

I read their FAQ in Italian, and it was not as clear as it is in English...
Perfect, keep up the good work guys!
