Hello,

I am basically happy with the product, but I observed taht my USB 2.0 hub and other USB flash (SONY microvault 2.0) are not recognized anymore. The WXP SP2 says "USB device not recognized". The hub and the flash both worked OK on this PC.

Any ideas?

Alex

It seems that there is a problem with the USB controller of your PC or the device itself.

- Does it work on other computers?
- Do other USB drives (or other USB devices) work on your computer?

Hello Alex,

Yeas, everything worked, all the onboard ports, the hub, the keys. That's why I was surprised and I did not perform any modifcations on my system, except for the DL.

Thanks,

Alex

This problem is rampant with SP2. A look through various posts on the Web is enough to be convincing, but today I got all the proof I needed.

After years of trouble-free operation, I finally had to reinstall XP. I also wanted to use some software that requires SP2, so I installed XP from a boot CD with SP2. Now, almost none of my USB devices work, not even my mouse and keyboard (which go through a hub). A simple thumbdrive now doesn't work. Every device gets "USB device not recognized".

I'm on the phone right now with a Microsoft support guy (which in itself is astounding), but after about 45 minutes of dicking around we still haven't found an answer. And frankly, I don't think we will, because I think this is a huge defect in SP2.

The question is, why has it gone unaddressed and unpublicized for so long?

Congratulations for getting the chance to actually talk to a person in that company. I once tried to find a support email address, but all I got was forms, forms.. forms... and still no email address... whatever...

I am sure that this is not a problem caused by SP2 itself, instead it is a mixture of several elements, one of which is SP2. This makes the problem difficult to simulate, thus difficult to debug.

Try using some flavor of a LiveCD with Linux or Windows, and see if in that OS the USB device problem persists. If not, then it is more likely to be an SP2-issue; otherwise it's probably a problem with your hardware?
