View Full Version : Unable to install drivers per instructions

I received the SIM reader. I have already installed the SIM manager and put in the registration code. But when I run SIMReader.exe, step 5 is skipped and the screen ends up saying to reboot the system. I did and the reader still can't be found. Its red LED is glowing. So I decided maybe having the SIM manager installed might cause some problem and uninstalled it, and repeated the process. Same thing happens.
Finally the windows new hardware wizard pops up and I direct it to where the driver files where stored. c:/program files/dekart/sim reader it fumbles around for a while and finally acts as if it is transfering some files. I checked c:/windows/system32/drivers and don't see the expected alcorscd.sys file. So I manually copied & pasted it. Not to sure about that working, never tried forcing drivers into Windows before. Anyway after a reboot the card reader still can't be found by SIM Manager.
So try the whole installation process on my wife's computer and get the same thing (step 5 is skipped) and after the requested reboot the SIM Manager fails to see the card reader.
The instructions seem simple enough, I'd think I could follow them, but when the one step is skipped, what should I do? I'm running Windows XP Home on Compaq Presario 2135US laptop.
Also tried going into the control panel and doing the hardware install and giving the alcorscd.sys file location, but that also failed to properly install the drivers.
At the moment I'm out of ideas as how to make the reader work. What now?

I then downloaded a fresh copy of the simreader.exe setup file ver 1.4.1.0 and tried it again. Step 5 where I'm supposed to plug the reader into the USB port is skipped over. The result is the same; the manager doesn't recognize the reader. And I'm fresh out of ideas.

Tried the following:
Unplugged all USB devices from the computer. It only has 2, but I had a 4 port hub and unplugged it. BTW all attempts with the SIM reader were direct into the upper USB port on the computer. That port somehow has COM IRQ info and seems more general purpose than the second one. A USB to serial port works in the top but not the bottom w/o the IRQ info.
Checked the device manager for USB and get the 3 following:
USB Unknown Device (I'm assuming that's the SIM reader)
ALi PCI to USB Open Host
USB Root Hub
Checked the services and get:
Smart Card | Started | Automatic | Local Service
When I run the downloaded ver 1.4.1.0 program; the banner at the top of the window says its Dekart Sim Reader 1.01. Maybe wrong s/w?
Went into Zone Alarm and gave Dekart permissions w/o needing to popup questions during the installation. Thought maybe ZoneLabs was interfering with device recognition timing requirements or something.
None of this changed anything, installation says its done, but never asks to plug the reader into the USB, skipping step 5. If I do plug it in during the reboot requested, it is not recognized and I get the following error message on SIM Manager:
PC/SC readers were not found in the system!
Check the Key reader installation.
One other thing I note, if it means anything at all; is the description for the reader says it has a GREEN LED human interface. Mine glows RED. Should it be green? The case is a red transparent plastic and I thought the red LED was just to match the plastic housing.

Bill, your report is pretty detailed, and it seems that your actions are correct. We'll have to go for an alternative approach, see Dekart Intervention (http://www.dekart.com/support/intervention/). I can remotely connect to your PC and will try to figure out what causes the problem.
If this is possible, send me a private message (in order not to publicly reveal your contact details) with your ICQ number (or another IM-system), so that we could synchronize.

With the computer running, if I unplug the reader, wait a few seconds and plug it back in. I get the audio sound POP from windows showing a USB device was plugged in.
A popup then says "USB Device not recognized"
"One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it."
Highlighted in bold type is Unknown Device
And at the bottom of the screen says "Recommendation Try reconnecting the device. If windows still does not recognize it, replace the device."

Try connecting it via the USB hub. Also, could you tell me:
- which other devices are plugged into USB ports (including the ports on the hub)
- whether on both computers you get the same 'unrecognized USB device' message

The hub is plugged back in and the reader plugged into it. Other devices are:
XACT XVP640 USB phone for Skype. And just the cable to the digital camera.
No other USB plugged into the remaining computer USB port.
On my wifes computer the same manager showing started & automatic, and unknown device for the reader under hardware. Hers has the reader, a thumbdrive, PDA, and camera cable in the hub.
BTW I get a delivery failure when trying to send email to your hotmail address from my hotmail address. Also tried your hotmail from my outlook express and get a delivery failure for your address.

Downloaded IM and sent a message, but your email hotmail account seems invalid. Installed VNC and think I'm ready here.

Hi Alex
Any more ideas, or should I get it replaced?

I too have had the same problems. The closest I've gotten to getting it installed was on a laptop with Windows 98. It doesn't skip step 5, but the drivers don't work with the SIM reader.

I'm having the exact same problem. Everything sonorabill described happened to me as well. Any solutions?

Luigi, have you tried the troubleshooting tips that were suggested to him? (try the device on another computer, connect it via a USB hub, or to a different port, etc)

Well it's nearly mid year of 2007 and Dekart is still shipping their USB SIM card reader without any drivers, online support with up-to-date FAQs addressing the issue, or any real final solution. I too am having the same problems that EVERYONE else in this thread is having and there seems to be no remedy. The "solution" replace the reader isn't acceptable as there can't possibly be this many "faulty" readers being manufactured by Dekart - Quality Control. So I have a useless USB something that I blew $30 on...

I must say that I disagree with what you wrote.
It is either a problem with our ability to express the information, or a problem with your ability to look for it. Regardless of that, the role of the forum is to point out such issues and handle them, that's what we're doing now.
The driver is available here (http://www.dekart.com/pub/products/SIM%20Reader%202/2.00/English/SIMReader2.exe), there is a link to it on the product's main page (http://www.dekart.com/products/hardware/sim_card_reader/), in the left column.
If you have an older model, then you should use this Howto-guide (http://www.dekart.com/howto/howto_sim_reader/howto_install_sim_reader/), there is a link to the right driver for that device.
You can see which model you have by comparing it to the pictures on the pages above.
Have you ever contacted our support team about this problem?
For how long have you been (not)using the device, and why do you report this problem now? (i.e. why not earlier?)
So I have a useless USB something that I blew $30 on...
I imagine how that feels, and I am sorry that so far your interaction with Dekart was not one full of joy. Replacing the device is a solution, what would you prefer us to do instead?
If you wish to replace it, contact support at dekart dot com to find out the details about the procedure. Prior to that, you will be asked a couple of questions, to make sure that we know exactly what the problem is.

I am having exactly the same problems as sonorabill. How do I resolve this?
My operating system is Windows XP Proffesional.
Thanks,

Mark,
The problem discussed earlier refers to a previous model of the reader, it is not in sales anymore. It is likely that you are trying the new reader with an old driver - so naturally, it won't work.
Take a look at Dekart SIM Reader quickstart guide (http://www.dekart.com/fileadmin/en/downloads/userGuide/SIM-Card-Reader-quickstart-guide.pdf), there is a link to the driver you need to use, and some basic troubleshooting steps.
If the problem persists, tell me whether the reader you have is the one shown on the picture in the guide, or if you refer to the other model.

I too had all of the same issues as described with the driver intallation. I know what my issue and this site's issue is with my problem. On the driver link on this page : http://www.dekart.com/free_download/drivers/
You get the following file: SIMReader.exe
this is the one i installed and uninstalled and rebooted etc all with no joy.
the driver appears to be outdated as the driver in the link above in Alex Railien's quote is a file called: SIMReader2.exe
I installed this one and now all is working fine. this is the one that is also available by following the link on this page: http://www.dekart.com/index.php?id=2396
which is found off a link on downloads page as opposed to the drivers page.
Hope this helps you all get this sorted out.
I am happy with the product as it now works and does exactly what was promised.
best regards,
Mike Power

Bill, this should be green and acts as a matter of insurance for it working properly.
