Default Running PD without Admin rights

Hi ..

I am testing your software to see if I can use it to run from a USB key without Admin rights to the PC.
Ie create the drive on one machine and take it to another on the USB with all the Prog files etc as explained in http://www.dekart.com/es/howto/howto..._drive_cd_dvd/

and open the drive on the new computer without admin prv.

I want to enable a number of pc's to execute the program without manually running the software on each machine .. I need to know what reg keys and drivers need to be coppied so that i can do this ..

Can you assist me please ..

thanks

Michael Henry

You will need to follow the instructions from that guide, they are given in the Q&A section (When I connect my encrypted USB drive to a different computer, this error occurs, what is wrong?), but some corrections need to be made. A new driver was added (since version 2.06), pdfilter.sys. You can read about it in a different thread: http://forum.dekart.com/showthread.php?t=578 (somebody solved an identical problem)

My problem is slightly different... it states in the how to that

"Note: these actions must be performed after Private Disk was once executed on the system by a user with administrative privileges. [Otherwise, the drivers will not be in the list, nor the respective registry keys will be created]."

I want to be able to run the USB drive on a non admin priv machine without having first run it as an admin ..

we have a large network and want the users to be able to run the program on any machine, thus the admin overhead is too great to log on as admin run the program and then log off on all machines in our network.

Can I get the drivers to run and create the Reg keys in another way. ?
I would ideally like to create a package that adds the drivers and the reg keys automatically.

Thanks

Ah, indeed, you need a different approach.

You'll need to do the following actions:
  • copy pdfilter.sys, prvdisk.sys, pdrjndl.sys to C:\Windows\system32\drivers
  • run the REG file attached to this message (its contents will be posted below)
  • reboot the computer

The reg file:
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\PRVDISK] "Type"=dword:00000001 "ErrorControl"=dword:00000001 "Start"=dword:00000001 "DisplayName"="PRVDISK" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\PDRJNDL] "Type"=dword:00000001 "ErrorControl"=dword:00000001 "Start"=dword:00000001 "DisplayName"="PDRJNDL" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\PDFILTER] "Type"=dword:00000001 "ErrorControl"=dword:00000001 "Start"=dword:00000001 "DisplayName"="PDFILTER"

Make sure you reboot the computer, this is very important.
You can make a BAT file that will copy the files then automatically add the entries to the registry, so that the necessary components can be easily deployed to remote computers on a network.

If things don't work, please do the following:
- see My computer\Properties\Hardware
- set View\Show hidden devices
- scroll to Non-PnP devices
- find PDFILTER, PRVDISK and PDRJNDL, and check their status

If the status is not 'started', tell me what it is.

Ok thanks for that great help .. but I am still getting "you do not have sufficent rights to run this program "

the drivers loaded the reg file worked
and those three files are in status of started

could my problem be because I am running a 30 day trial version and not a full licenced version ? I saw this in another Post about admin rights?

Yes, the cause is the fact that the program is not registered.

In such a case, it needs access to certain registry areas, so that it can determine its "position in time", if I can express myself that way.

Solutions:
  • If you run the program as an administrator, the registry key will be accessed, and afterwards the problem will not occur under guest accounts. (But this is not what you are looking for, since you need a "100% no-admin plan")
  • If the program is registered, you can write the registration number to the ini file (prvdisk.ini), registry access will not be needed (if the number is found in the ini, the program continues its activities), so this is a better scenario.

The problem is that you need a registration number for that. It's a pity that these trial-period and integrity self-checks are, in one way or another, limiting your freedom; but we had to do that, in order to certainly avoid situations in which different patches would alter the program in such a way that it becomes insecure (or does something else besides data encryption).

Thanks again but still getting the error that I do not have the rights to run the file.

to cover off where I am at .. I have
1- Put PDFILTER.SYS , PRVDISK.SYS and PDRJNDL.sys in the target machines C:\windows\system32\drivers folder ..

2- ran the Reg file provided and verified that all drivers are started.

3- Bought a liscnece and added the liscence key to the PRVDISK.ini file on the Thumb Drive contents are below ..

[Private Disk]
AutoRun=0
SysTray=1
ExitConfirmation=0
CheckUpdate=1
Was_Update_Checked=Year2006 Month5 WeekD2 Day16
AssociateFileExtension=1
ProposeDiskSymbol=0
WriteLogFiles=0
ExploreOnMount=1
CheckForOpenedFiles=0
TimeOutFlag=0
DismountAllHotKey=635
IconPath1=C:\Program Files\Dekart\Private Disk\PrvDisk.exe
IconIndex1=1
IconPath2=C:\Program Files\Dekart\Private Disk\PrvDisk.exe
IconIndex2=2
IconPath3=C:\Program Files\Dekart\Private Disk\PrvDisk.exe
IconIndex3=0
ApplicationPath=C:\Program Files\Dekart\Private Disk\PrvDisk.exe
SerialNumber=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx x

I have also tried exporting the Reg files containing the serial number to the target machine .. ie
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Dekart\Private Disk]

has this device been used/tested for what I am attempting .. ?

Thanks again ..

Michael Henry

Hi Michael,

I'll jump in here before Alex does - I have been through this loop with him before.

If I am right in thinking that the Private Disk executable resides on the removable disc I think you need to change the application path (and the icon paths?) in the ini file so that it just reads PrvDisk.exe.

Hope that works otherwise I'm sure Alex will sort it out.

.........or maybe it was the paths in the registry that had to be changes???

Alex, I think you might have to dig me out of this one!

Hmm, I am not sure I know what the cause of this one is, but since the drivers are said to be loaded and running, it means the problem is elsewhere.

Michael, in order to obtain more details, we'll need the logs of some of the program's components. Please enable the logging mode by creating these empty files in C:
  • dk_versnum.log
  • dk_about.log
  • dk_pdapi.log
  • dk_pd.log
  • dk_prvdisk.log

Try to run the program, then send us the logs by email to support[at]dekart[dot]com
